Joint International Conference on
Intercontinental Transport of
Atmospheric Mercury
and Persistent Organic Pollutants

Organized by the
UNEP Global Partnership of Atmospheric
Mercury Transport and Fate Research

and the
Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution
under the LRTAP Convention

Hosted by the Italian Ministry of Environment
and the CNR-Institute for Atmospheric Pollution

7- 11 April 2008, Rome, Italy

Mercury (Hg) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may be transported in the atmosphere over long distances and between continents and may damage human health and the environment far from the original sources. These pollutants are of major concerns for local and national governments and are the subject of international cooperative research and assessment programs, including the UNEP Global Partnership of Atmospheric Mercury Transport and Fate Research (UNEP Hg T&F Partnership) and the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollutants (TF HTAP) under UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP).

This international conference on Hg and POPs will assess the role of long-range transport and collect scientific evidence on the magnitude of such pollution in the Northern Hemisphere and globally. The specific objectives of the conference are inter alia

  • to present and discuss scientific findings and quantifications of intercontinental transport of Hg and POPs
  • to review the draft assessment produced by the UNEP Hg T&F Partnership for the UNEP Governing Council's 2009 meeting
  • to recommend and plan further studies for global and regional modelling of these pollutants
  • to outline the Hg and POPs elements of the TF HTAP's 2009 assessment to the CLRTAP.

Plenary sessions are planned on

  • Sources of Mercury Released to the Atmosphere
  • Spatial Coverage and Temporal Trends of Mercury Measurements
  • Understanding Atmospheric Mercury on Hemispheric and Global Scales
  • Global POP Monitoring
  • Emissions of POPs
  • POPs Modelling
  • Main features of REACH regulation relevant to CLRTAP

Formal business meetings of the UNEP Hg T&F Partnership and the TF HTAP will be incorporated into the schedule of the conference.

The organisation of the meeting is done through the UNEP Hg T&F Partnership and TF HTAP. Further information and links to registration and accommodations will be made available through the website www.htap.org .
